This is a growing list of some of my favorite institutions: Art centers, art leagues, art, science, and historical museums, research libraries, cultural centers and more. I'm starting with Florida and moving outward. Enjoy.


African American Museum of the Arts

One of two museums in central Florida whose purpose includes reaching out to artists of color. Don't be deceived by their size. This small but powerful group are tireless hosts of fine art exhibits, poetry readings, art camps for kids and so on. I hold them in the highest regard. Located in DeLand, Florida. Check them out.

The Albin Polasek Museum

The studio and sculpture garden of the late Albin Polasek, located near Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida.

The Art League of Daytona Beach

A non-profit, admission-free education and exhibition center for the visual arts.. Events, classes and shows year-round. Located in Daytona Beach, Florida.

Artist Showcase

Artists Showcase is a resource for ethnic art and history. While we strive to meet the needs of under served and emerging artists, we also showcase well known artists from across the United States and through out the Diaspora. All of the work here has educational and historic value and is considered a valuable contribution to the creation of our diverse world culture. Located in West Palm Beach, Florida.

Atlantic Center for the Arts

Artists-in-residency programs for the visual and performing arts, based in New Smyrna Beach, Florida.

The Auburn Avenue Research Library

The Auburn Avenue Research Library on African-American Culture and History is a Special Library of the Atlanta-Fulton County Library System. It is the first library of its kind in the southeast offering specialized reference and archival collections for the study and research of African cultures. The library is a public facility with non-circulating collections, services and programs free and open to the general public. Located in the heart of Atlanta, Georgia.

Cornell Fine Arts Museum at Rollins College

The Cornell Fine Arts Museum at Rollins College is one of the finest college art museums in the Southeast. Accredited by the American Association of Museums in 1981, the Cornell houses a collection of more than 5,000 objects. It is the oldest collection in Florida, with the first paintings having been given to Rollins College more than a century ago. Located in Winter Park, Florida.

The DeLand Museum of Art

The DeLand Museum of Art integrates exhibitions, collections, and educational programs to create an inviting, enriching, Located in downtown DeLand, Florida. and stimulating experience for a diverse audience.

Deltona Arts & Historical Center

Designed to cultivate the artistic community with services including exhibits and a professional recording studio. Located in Deltona, Florida.

Florida Holocaust Museum

Dedicated to providing education and understanding of the Holocaust or Shoah, and preventing genocide, racisim and prejudice; resources for teachers and students. Located in Maitland, Florida.

Harry T. & Harriette V. Moore Cultural Complex

A beautiful cultural center and park located in Mims, Florida, currently holding a civil rights history exhibit. The Moores were extremely effective political activists in the 1930's to early 1950's. The Center stands on the site of their home which was bombed while they slept on Christmas of 1951.

High Museum of Art

Atlanta's premier fine art museum located in the heart of the city.

The History Center

The Orange County Regional History Center offers an array of informative exhibits on three fun-packed floors that represent life in Florida in vastly different points in time. This place is very cool. Located in downtown Orlando, FL.

Maitland Art Center

The Maitland Art Center was founded as an art colony (called the Research Studio)  in 1938 by visionary American artist and architect André Smith (1880-1959).  This tradition continues at MAC today, with gallery exhibitions, resident artists, a strong curriculum of art instruction in an intimate atmosphere, and community programming. Located in Maitland, Florida.

Mount Dora Center for the Arts

An outgrowth of the Mount Dora Arts Festival. It provides quality art experiences in the Lake County region of Central Florida all year, including gallery exhibits, arts education programs and the annual Mount Dora Arts Festival in Mount Dora, Florida.

Museum of Arts and Sciences

A comprehensive museum with several permanent collections, home to the most complete fossil record in Florida and a planetarium. Located in Daytona Beach, FL.

National Library of Jamaica

The NLJ's online library of biographies is a great resource that I used to research such icons as Alvin Marriott, Alexander Busamante and Norman Manley. Located in Kingston, Jamaica.

Orlando Museum of Art

One of Florida's cultural gems. The collection focuses on American art from the 19th century to the present, African art and art of the ancient Americas. Located in Orlando, Florida.

Orlando Science Center

Scientific experiments exhibits, planetarium, school programs, science fairs, scholarship information, hours, prices, directions.

Ormond Memorial Art Museum

A showcase for paintings, drawings, video, mixed media, photography and three-dimensional works of art. Located in Ormond Beach, Florida.

The Osceola Center for the Arts

A leading Art Center in Central Florida offering a wide range of visual arts, theater productions and educational programs. Located in Kissimmee, Florida.

Ringling Museum of Art

The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art, established in 1927, is recognized as the official State Art Museum of Florida, the Museum of Art offers 21 galleries of European paintings as well as Cypriot antiquities, Asian Art, American paintings, and contemporary art. This place is something else. Located in Tampa, Florida.

The Official Website of the Salvador Dali Museum in St Petersburg, Florida

Seminole Cultural Arts Council

The Council serves the cultural and artistic needs of the county. It advocates the preservation of local cultural and historic heritage, including performing, literary, visual arts and sciences. We have newsletters, fundraisers, workshops, seminars, and grants. Headquartered in Casselberry, Florida.

The Wells' Built Museum of African-American History

A museum that explores the life of Orlando blacks during the first half of the 20th century; The casino, hotel and the fabulous musicians who played. Located in the heart of Orlando.

The Zora Neale Hurston National Museum of Fine Arts

The Zora Neale Hurston National Museum of Fine Arts (The Hurston) was established in 1990 to provide a place in the heart of the community where the public can view the work of artists of African descent, who live on the Continent and/or in the Diaspora. Located in Eatonville, Florida in the oldest, existing, incorporated African American city in America.
